Quantitative analysis is a financial modeling methodology that uses statistical modeling and data analysis to understand behavior and assess overall business performance. Quantitative analysts (also known as quants) collect and evaluate data such as revenue and wages, which have numerical values. Quants then use that information to determine a financial instrument’s valuation and predict future economic events.

Quantitative vs. Qualitative Analysis: What’s the Difference?

The primary difference between quantitative and qualitative analysis is the types of data you seek to examine. You can analyze the same data sets both ways to gain separate insights. The differences between the two are:

  • Quantitative analysis measures quantitative data, categorized as functional information. Quantitative models use metrics based on facts and numerical figures, such as statistics, formulas, and percentages. Calculating the sales revenue of one of your products is an example of quantitative analysis.
  • Qualitative analysis measures qualitative data, categorized as conceptual information. Unlike quantitative methods, you rarely use numbers to measure qualitatively. Instead, this analysis focuses on determining the cause of behavior by asking why it occurred. An example of qualitative analysis is holding a focus group to find out why your customers like a specific product.

Although quantitative analysis deals with numbers, there is more than one way to analyze these numbers. The different types of quantitative analysis include:

In that case, linear programming can help you decide the most cost-effective route for production.
