What Is Porridge?
Porridge is a hot cereal made by boiling grains or legumes in milk, broth, or water. This gives porridge a thick, viscous consistency, similar to gruel. Certain porridges, like oatmeal, are made from milk and rolled oats. To make porridge, you can use other whole grains—such as corn, rice, maize, millet, spelt, barley, and wheat. Rice porridge, or congee, is a popular form of porridge in Asian cuisines. Corn is a main ingredient in grits (a popular porridge in the Southern United States) and polenta, an Italian version of porridge.
What Is Oatmeal?
Oatmeal is a type of porridge made by boiling oats in milk or water. It is a popular kind of breakfast porridge. There are different types of oats that you can use when making oatmeal, such as rolled oats, old-fashioned oats, steel-cut oats, whole oats, and instant oats. You can prepare it as a savory or sweet dish—with flavorings like maple syrup, dried fruit, fresh fruit, or brown sugar. Oatmeal is a gluten-free source of carbohydrates, in addition to being low in sugar with the potential to reduce harmful types of cholesterol in your body.
Similarities Between Porridge and Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a kind of porridge, meaning there are many similarities between the two foods. Fo oatmeal and most kinds of porridge, you will boil grains in a liquid, typically water or milk. This means they both have similar cooking times, around twenty to thirty minutes when prepared on the stovetop. Porridge and oatmeal are also both soft foods with a gruel-like texture. These dishes can be chunky or silky depending on the coarseness of the grains used to cook them, and you typically serve both warm.
Porridge vs. Oatmeal: How They Differ
There are some key differences when it comes to porridge and oatmeal, mostly pertaining to the fact that porridge is a broader description for a number of dishes cooked using stewed grains. Oatmeal is always made with oats, whether you're making instant oatmeal or oatmeal from whole oat groats.
On the other hand, you can use a variety of grains—such as cornmeal, semolina, quinoa, and polena—to make different types of porridge. There are many different kinds of porridge enjoyed all over the world. In Russia and Eastern Europe, the most popular form of porridge is kasha, made from buckwheat. In Asian cuisines, congee is a porridge made from rice.
