What Is Pink Himalayan Salt?

Pink Himalayan salt is a type of rock salt mined in the Punjab region of Pakistan near the Himalayas. This coarse, pink sea salt is a popular ingredient and seasoning for savory and sweet dishes. In addition to its culinary uses, this ancient salt can be part of salt therapy involving Himalayan salt lamps, body scrubs, and sauna spa treatments.

How Is Pink Himalayan Salt Made?

Pink Himalayan salt comes from the Khewra Salt Mine, one of the oldest and largest salt mines globally, where approximately 800 million pounds of salt is mined each year. The salt deposits in the Khewra Salt Mine are leftover salt from ancient sea beds from 600 million years ago that have evaporated. The salt crystals are extracted by hand, and the salt blocks are inspected for quality and cleaned. The salt is then ground into a fine grain for human consumption or turned into products, such as natural salt lamps.

3 Ways to Use Pink Himalayan Salt

Pink Himalayan salt can be an ingredient, a seasoning, or even a cooking utensil.

  1. 1. Ingredient: You can use Himalayan sea salt in any dish that calls for regular table salt, such as soups and marinades.
  2. 2. Seasoning: Sprinkle Himalayan salt over popcorn for a milder flavor than table salt, or top a chocolate cake with pink sea salt for a crunchy texture.
  3. 3. Salt block: Use a Himalayan salt block to cook and serve steak, seafood, and other dishes. The salt block retains heat and imparts flavor to dishes.

Pink Himalayan Salt vs. Table Salt

Pink Himalayan sea salt is similar to table salt in that it is made of 98 percent sodium chloride, the key ingredient in salt, but unlike table salt, pink salt also contains trace minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron—all of which give it its pink color. Himalayan salt can contain up to 84 trace elements. Table salt is processed to remove impurities and contains additives such as anti-caking agents, whereas pink salt is unrefined.

Pink Salt vs. Black Salt

Both pink Himalayan salt and black Himilayan salt are types of rock salt, but they have a few key differences:

  • Color: Both types of salt are naturally occurring rock salts in the Himalayas. Pink salt can range from pink to orange in color. Black salt can be pinkish-brown to black.
  • Flavor: In terms of flavor, black salt is smokey and sulfurous, while pink salt is more mild.
  • Minerals: Black salt contains traces of sulfates, iron sulfide, magnesium, potassium, and other elements found in the rocks of the Himalayan mountains. Minerals in pink salt include calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
