What Are Peperomia Plants?
Peperomias are succulent indoor plants with waxy, fleshy leaves, and green or red stems. They come in various textures, colorings, and sizes—for instance, some have heart-shaped leaves while others sprout thinner or rounder foliage. Peperomias are one of the most ubiquitous members of the Piperaceae plant family, and you can trace their lineage back to the rainforests of South and Central America. Another common name for peperomia is radiator plants. While peperomias are tropical plants that grow outdoors in their natural habitat, many people throughout the world prefer to keep them as houseplants.
3 Types of Peperomia
There are countless types of peperomia plants. Here are three of the most popular:
- 1. Watermelon peperomia: With variegated patterns on their leaves, watermelon peperomia (Peperomia argyreia) can be suitable hanging basket plants if you let their stems grow out long enough.
- 2. Emerald ripple peperomia: Green leaves are common on emerald ripple peperomia (Peperomia caperata), but so are purplish and red ones.
- 3. Baby rubber plants: Despite their common name, Peperomia obtusifolia plants are unrelated to proper rubber plants (Ficus elastica). Some baby rubber plants produce tall flower spikes.
