What Are Pentas?
Pentas (Pentas lanceolata) are warm-climate perennials primarily known for their star-shaped flowers. In cooler climates, you can plant them as annuals in the early summer. Pentas plants have a couple of alternative common names, including Egyptian star cluster and Egyptian star flower. Pentas plants belong to the family Rubiaceae—the same family as gardenias and coffee plants.
Pentas come in a wide array of flower colors—from white to soft pink to fiery red—depending on the species. Pentas flowers are effective at attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies and produce a sweet nectar favored by hummingbirds as well. For a show-stopping butterfly garden, grow pentas alongside lantanas, butterfly bush, marigolds, and salvia. Pentas are nontoxic to pets and humans and are not considered an invasive species.
How to Grow and Care for Pentas
Pentas make for great low-maintenance bedding plants as well as container plants. Consider the following factors before growing pentas.
- 1. Climate: Pentas thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones ten and eleven. In cooler climates, you can bring them indoors and keep them as houseplants through the winter.
- 2. Light: Pentas thrive in flower beds and container gardens that receive full sun. They will tolerate partial shade but can become leggy if they don’t get at least three hours of bright light a day.
- 3. Soil: Plant pentas in well-draining, slightly acidic soil. A soil pH of six is ideal.
- 4. Water: Pentas do best in consistently moist soil. Overhead watering can damage the foliage, so water the ground around the base of the plant instead.
- 5. Mulch: Cover the surrounding soil with a layer of mulch to help keep the soil moist. When pentas become too dry, they are prone to spider mite infestations.
- 6. Pruning: If grown as an annual, pentas do not need to be pruned. However, regular deadheading during the growing season will keep your plant healthy and encourage new growth.
4 Popular Pentas Cultivars
Pentas cultivars include dwarf variations and varieties with higher disease resistance. Consider some popular cultivated varieties of pentas.
- 1. ‘Graffiti Red Lace’: This red pentas cultivar features clusters of bright red flowers with white centers. They reach a mature height of twelve inches.
- 2. ‘Graffiti Lipstick’: The ‘Graffiti Lipstick’ pentas cultivar has rosy pink flower clusters. They reach a mature height of twelve inches.
- 3. ‘Kaleidoscope Appleblossom’: Featuring clusters of soft pink flowers with white centers, this pink pentas cultivar reaches a mature height of eighteen inches.
- 4. ‘Northern Lights Lavender’: This pentas cultivar has been bred to tolerate cooler temperatures. It boasts clusters of pink-lavender flowers and reaches a mature height of four feet.
