What Is Pear Liqueur?

Pear liqueur is a spirit with pear flavoring. Liqueurs, also known as cordials, are heavy, sweet, and complexly flavored drinks. Most begin with liquor as a base; then, distillers add herbs, spices, and other flavorings. Pear liqueur typically uses vodka as the base and features fresh pears, warm spices, and sugar to sweeten the alcohol and give it a pear flavor. Pear liqueur can also be made using pear brandy, simple syrup, and pears. To make pear liqueur, simmer pears in water, sugar, and spices, then infuse the mixture in vodka for two days.

To make pear liqueur, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  1. 1. Vodka: Vodka is a distilled liquor that is traditionally colorless and flavorless, either enjoyed neat (entirely on its own) or as the base spirit of several cocktails.
  2. 2. Pear: Any variety of fresh, ripe pears will work, such as Bosc or Bartlett pears.
  3. 3. Spices: Warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, whole cloves, and star anise work well for spiced pear liqueur. You can also add citrus peels and vanilla bean for more depth of flavor.
  4. 4. Sugar: Liqueurs are generally sweet. Use a white granulated sugar or turbinado sugar, which has a molasses flavor.

    In a medium saucepan, combine the pear slices, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, lemon peel, sugar, and water. Heat over low heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is fragrant.

    Combine the pear mixture and vodka in an airtight container.

    Close the jar and store for two days in a dark place, shaking the jar once or twice a day.

    Store the liqueur in an airtight bottle in the refrigerator for up to a year.
