What Is Pear Compote?
Pear compote is a thick and sweet pear condiment similar in texture to applesauce. Flavors that complement pear compote well include warm spices like ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, star anise, and cardamom.
Fruit compotes are unlike jellies in that compotes use the whole fruit instead of fruit juice. Many different types of pears will work in a compote, including Bartlett, D’Anjou, and Bosc pears.
4 Ways to Enjoy Pear Compote
A pear compote is thick and sweet and often contains cinnamon and nutmeg in addition to a strong pear flavor. Here are four ways to use pear compote:
- 1. Mix fresh fruit with a pear compote to make a fruit crisp. Mix pear compote with diced fresh fruit before adding it to a baking dish and topping it with a crisp topping. Bake the crisp in the oven until the top is golden brown and crispy and the fruit filling is hot and bubbling. Use pears, plums, and cranberries for a traditional fall fruit crisp.
- 2. Spoon warm pear compote over vanilla ice cream. The compote melts the ice cream slightly, creating a sweet, creamy, and thick dessert. Sprinkle nuts, such as toasted walnuts or pecans, over the dish if you want to add a crunchy texture.
- 3. Top pancakes or waffles with pear compote. Instead of using maple syrup over pancakes and waffles, use pear compote. The compote mimics the sweetness and warmness of maple syrup but adds the fruity sweetness of pears.
- 4. Use pear compote in yogurt parfaits. In a glass, layer plain Greek yogurt with pear compote and finish it with crunchy granola. Enjoy the dish for breakfast or as a midafternoon snack.
