What Is Peanut Butter Mousse?
Peanut butter mousse is a sweet, salty, airy, and creamy spin on classic chocolate mousse. Most homemade chocolate mousse recipes involve making a chocolate custard and then gently incorporating stiffly whipped cream or egg whites. Use peanut butter chips, creamy peanut butter, or peanut butter powder to add peanut butter flavor to the mousse. Many recipes also include gelatin to stabilize the mousse.
For added crunch, stir in chocolate chips or mini peanut butter cups. Use the mousse as a frosting for a layer cake or cupcakes, or make sundaes with ice cream topped with peanut butter mousse and peanut butter cookies.
4 Tips for Making Peanut Butter Mousse
Add peanut butter mousse to a no-bake peanut butter pie, use it to top brownies, or serve it with a garnish of chocolate shavings and whipped cream. Here are some other tips to consider:
- 1. Chill the stabilizing ingredients and components ahead of time. Whether the recipe calls for whipped cream, whipped egg whites, or both, refrigerate the heavy cream, eggs, and any mixing bowls and whisks. Cream and eggs whip to stiff peaks easier and quicker when cold than at room temperature.
- 2. Start with a white chocolate ganache. Some mousses start with custard, while others start with a chocolate ganache. Adding peanut butter to a white chocolate ganache is an easy method since a ganache requires only two ingredients: chocolate and cream.
- 3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Mousse needs to chill to set before serving. Store the dessert in a large airtight container in the refrigerator or individual containers for personal servings. Either way, chill the mousse for a minimum of four hours before serving.
- 4. Try peanut butter powder. If starting the peanut butter mousse recipe with white chocolate ganache, you can add peanut butter powder to the ganache instead of creamy peanut butter or peanut butter chips. Peanut butter powder has all the flavor of peanut butter without adding any moisture or oil that could destabilize the mousse.
