Orchid Cactus Care Tips: How to Grow an Orchid Cactus

Orchid cactus is the common name for a group of flowering succulents belonging to the genus Epiphyllum (Epis for short). They are native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. There are nineteen different Epiphyllum species that produce large, orchid-like blooms in a wide array of colors from early winter to early spring.

Much like an orchid, orchid cacti flowers are epiphytes, meaning they get their sustenance from the air and moisture surrounding the plant rather than from the cactus plant itself. Their broad, flat stems have lobed edges and produce no spines. One of the most common types of Epiphyllum cactus is queen of the night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum), which produces large, fragrant white flowers overnight.

Orchid cacti make great houseplants. Consider a few general tips for growing an orchid cactus.

1. 1. Water: Epiphyllum are tropical plants, so they need more water than a typical succulent plant. Water your orchid cactus when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid soaking the soil. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
2. 2. Soil: Use an organic, well-draining potting mix. Mix three parts peat moss potting soil with one part perlite to encourage draining and avoid overwatering.
3. 3. Light: The orchid cactus thrives in areas that receive bright light. In warmer climates, place the plant in indirect light during the hot, summer months.
4. 4. Pot: Pot your orchid cactus in a hanging basket to give its long stems the space to grow. Orchid cacti need to become root-bound to bloom, so ideally choose a pot or hanging basket that fits the roots snugly. Only consider repotting a mature plant during the winter months after the growth period has ended.

Consider these plant care tips for taking care of your orchid cactus.

1. 1. Expose the plant to mild temperatures. To maximize your orchid cactus blooms, expose the plant to cooler temperatures at night—preferably around sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit.
2. 2. Place a humidifier nearby. Orchid cacti are native to tropical jungles and thrive in humid environments. Consider placing a humidifier near your plant to mimic its natural habitat.
3. 3. Protect your plant from insects. Overwatering may lead to an infestation of fungus gnats. Orchid cacti are also prone to infestations of mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. If you see pests on your plant, apply neem oil or insecticidal soap.
4. 4. Propagate your plant as needed. New orchid cacti plants can be grown from stem cuttings. Cut off part of a stem and allow it to dry out until the cut end forms a callus. This process typically takes a couple of weeks. Then plant your stem cutting in cactus soil.
