4 Tips for Making Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are easy to make with little notice and versatile enough to personalize however you like. Here’s what to know.
- 1. Use brown sugar to make chewy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. If you believe that the best cookies have crispy edges and chewy centers, choose a recipe that uses brown sugar and butter. Then, take the cookies out of the oven when they start to turn dry and turn golden brown around the edges, usually around the ten-minute mark. (The cookies will continue to cook on the cookie sheet.) For crispier cookies, use lower-moisture white sugar, and bake them slightly longer.
- 2. Experiment with mix-ins. Oatmeal raisin is only the beginning: Consider adding shredded coconut, chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or macadamias, a swirl of peanut butter, or dried cranberries to your cookie dough.
- 3. Choose between styles of chocolate chips. Most chocolate chip cookies feature semisweet chocolate chips, but feel free to try white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chunks, milk chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or a combination. For gooey chocolate centers, use three-quarters of a cup (or even a full cup) of chocolate.
- 4. Store in a cool, dry spot. For best results, store the cookies in an airtight container and enjoy them within a week. For longer storage, rest the unbaked cookie dough balls on a sheet of parchment paper, then seal them in a freezer bag labeled with the date, and lie flat to store.
What Are Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are a hybrid between two classic cookies: oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip cookies. Recipes for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies combine flour, quick oats or old-fashioned rolled oats, butter, sugar, eggs, and leavening agents like baking soda or baking powder. You can also add warm spices like ground cinnamon or ground cardamom as a nod to classic oatmeal raisin cookies.
