What Is Mushroom Tortellini?
Mushroom tortellini is a dish that features cheese-filled tortellini tossed with sautéed mushrooms, butter, and Parmesan cheese to create a glossy, creamy sauce. Mushrooms are a good source of protein, potassium, vitamin B, and vitamin C. This comfort food recipe comes together quickly with premade fresh tortellini or frozen tortellini for a filling weeknight dinner.
How to Serve Mushroom Tortellini
Mushroom tortellini makes a filling main dish, but you can also serve it as part of a bigger meal:
- 1. Add more mushrooms: Sauté or grill extra mushrooms for garnish. Make a broth with the mushroom trimmings, sautéed onions, and fresh thyme, or use an enriched chicken broth as the base of the sauce with melted butter. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and this gremolata recipe featuring a dry mixture of parsley, garlic, and lemon rind.
- 2. Alongside protein: Add sautéed chicken, Italian sausage, or shrimp to the mushroom pasta dish for extra protein. Or keep it vegetarian by stirring in peas or baby spinach at the end of the cooking process.
- 3. In a cream sauce: Instead of a simple butter sauce, upgrade your tortellini with a creamy spinach Alfredo sauce. This Italian-American pasta sauce typically includes Parmesan cheese, heavy cream, and butter. Or you can simply stir in some basil pesto.
- 4. With a side of veggies: While you cook your tortellini on the stovetop, roast a vegetable side dish in the oven. Broccoli rabe, roasted artichokes, or cauliflower pair well with tortellini mushroom.

- 1
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- 2
Cook the tortellini in boiling water until barely al dente according to package directions, stirring to prevent sticking. You will know they are ready when all of the tortellini have popped up to the surface, about 5 minutes for fresh or 9 minutes for frozen (cut into one tortellini to make sure the filling is cooked through and the pasta is al dente).
- 3
Drain the pasta, reserving ¼ cup of the pasta water.
- 4
Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- 5
Add sliced mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and crispy in spots, 7–9 minutes.
- 6
Reduce heat to medium-low and add garlic, thyme, tortellini, 2 tablespoons butter, heavy cream, and reserved pasta water.
- 7
Gradually stir in half of the Parmesan cheese until the sauce is glossy and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- 8
Garnish the mushroom tortellini with the remaining Parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes, and basil. Serve with lemon wedges alongside for squeezing over the top.
- 9
Store leftover tortellini in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
