What Is a Meditation Space?

A meditation space is a relaxing area or room for practicing meditation. A dedicated meditation space makes it easier to meditate, focus, or practice yoga. Ideally, a meditation space should have natural light and airflow. You can transform a corner of a room or a small area into meditation space with calming paint, decor, and meditation accessories to get you into the headspace for meditation and relaxation.

How to Create a Meditation Space at Home

Consider the following interior design tips and meditation room ideas to help you create a DIY meditation space in your home:

  1. 1. Find a space. A meditation area can be an entire room or a corner of a living room or bedroom. Look for a space that has good airflow and natural light to support breathing and promote relaxation. Your meditation room should be a dedicated space for mindfulness—avoid using the area for other activities.
  2. 2. Declutter the area. Make sure your meditation space is clean and without clutter. It should be free of computers, televisions, paperwork, and other distractions.
  3. 3. Paint the walls. You can paint the walls of your small space a color to inspire feelings of calm, such as shades of blues, grays, and beiges. Bright colors such as red or orange can invoke feelings of anxiety.
  4. 4. Furnish the space. Add area rugs, pillows, a meditation cushion, an armchair, and a yoga mat to create a cozy space where you can comfortably sit and engage in meditation.
  5. 5. Outfit your meditation room. Decorate your meditation space with objects to inspire calm, such as incense sticks or essential oil diffusers for aromatherapy, a singing bowl, scented candles, crystals, salt lamps, paintings, and tapestries. You can also add a small portable speaker to your space so you can listen to relaxing music and meditation apps.
  6. 6. Add some natural elements. Greenery and natural elements can encourage relaxation. Add plants to your meditation space to help you feel like you’re in nature.
