An Overview of Matthew Walker’s Book “Why We Sleep: Unpacking the Science of Sleep”

In Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams (published by Scribner), Dr. Matthew Walker explores the science of sleep and the many ways it impacts the human brain, body, and immune system. This book unpacks what human brain waves look like when we sleep, the importance of rapid eye movement sleep (also known as REM sleep), why we dream, and how dreaming affects our sleep patterns.

Matthew also sheds light on how many hours of sleep the body needs and how it handles sleep deprivation. He also investigates the many ways that human beings get shut-eye and discusses various sleep aids—such as melatonin or sleeping pills—and sleep disorders, and how mental illness or rare diseases can occur without enough sleep.

Why We Sleep landed spots on the New York Times bestsellers list and the Sunday Times bestsellers list in the UK and received the 2020 Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization.
