What Is a Margarita Pitcher?
A margarita pitcher is a large batch of Margarita cocktails with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. Typically, the batched cocktail decants in a pitcher, and you can pour the mixed drink into individual cocktail glasses. You can easily prepare a pitcher of the classic Margarita cocktail by easily adapting your favorite recipe.
4 Essential Margarita Ingredients
The grassy, herbaceous notes of agave spirits pair particularly well with herbs, citrus, and spicy peppers. Feel free to muddle in fresh ingredients or modifiers to your liking, keeping in mind that the fundamental key to a great sour is an interplay between sweet and sour that harmonizes with the base spirit. The essential ingredients for a perfect Margarita are:
- 1. Lime: Skip the Margarita mix. Freshly squeezed lime juice is the key to making the best Margarita. Keep extra limes on hand for garnish.
- 2. Tequila: Reposado tequila is a great choice for a classic Margarita, but tequila blanco (aka silver tequila), tequila anejo, and even smoky mezcal can all make a good Margarita.
- 3. Orange liqueur: An orange-flavored triple-sec like Cointreau provides sweetness to balance the lime juice. If you don’t have Cointreau, try using Grand Marnier (an orange-flavored Cognac), agave syrup, or simple syrup for sweetener.
- 4. Salt: To make a salt rim, rub a lime wedge along the rim of the glass, then dip it in a shallow bowl filled with sea or kosher salt.
6 Tips for Making a Pitcher of Margaritas
The process of making a pitcher of margaritas differs from making one or two cocktails with a cocktail shaker. Follow these guidelines to prepare a pitcher:
- 1. Make ahead and refrigerate. With a large pitcher of margaritas, adding too much ice can cause excess dilution of the cocktails. If possible, make the pitcher ahead of time and cool it down in the fridge. Then you can serve it to your guests on the rocks.
- 2. Prep the cocktail glasses. You can also prepare the signature salt rim of margaritas to save time. Simply wet the rim of the cocktail glasses with lime juice and dip them gently in coarse salt. You can also half-salt the rims by tilting the glass slightly.
- 3. Use large ice cubes. If you don’t have time to refrigerate the pitcher, use larger ice cubes in the pitcher since larger cubes take longer to melt. You can also add one large ice cube to each cocktail glass.
- 4. Sweeten to taste. Add agave nectar or simple syrup to the Margarita pitcher for additional sweetness.
- 5. Add some heat. To add some spiciness, you can use slices of green jalapeño as an additional garnish.
- 6. Try mezcal. Mezcal can add an extra layer of depth and complexity to your Margarita pitcher. To balance the smokiness of mezcal, you can use half tequila and half mezcal for your cocktails.
