What Is Maple Butter?
Maple butter, also called maple cream, is a spreadable condiment made by combining butter and maple syrup. There are two kinds of maple butter:
- Pure maple butter: This maple butter is made by heating real maple syrup above a boil (to 235 degrees Fahrenheit, the “soft ball” stage on a candy thermometer), quickly cooling it, and stirring it until creamy. You can make this kind of maple butter at home, and it’s also commonly sold in stores.
- Maple butter: Classic maple butter is made by combining beaten butter and maple syrup. This easy method doesn’t require a candy thermometer, and it takes less time.
How to Use Maple Butter
Maple butter can elevate the flavor of your favorite pastries, quickbreads, and cakes. If you have a jar of homemade maple butter in the fridge, use it as a spread on pancakes, toast, waffles, biscuits, and quickbreads like banana bread and pound cake. You can also swap unsweetened butter with maple butter in your favorite buttercream frosting recipe.
