What Is a Mango Mojito?

A Mango Mojito is a variation on a classic Mojito, a highball cocktail with origins in Cuba. The drink’s core components are light or dark rum, lime juice, and mint, accented by mango juice, mango nectar, or fresh mango purée. If you’re new to this drink, learn how to make a Mojito the traditional way.

3 Tips for Making a Mango Mojito

You can shake this classic drink in a cocktail shaker or assemble it directly in a highball cocktail glass. Here’s what to know.

  1. 1. Choose how to incorporate the mango. Mango juice and mango nectar (a mixture of mango juice, water, and occasionally, additional sweeteners) are the easiest ways to integrate mango flavor into a Mojito. However, if you have a very ripe mango on hand and don’t mind a pulpy texture, muddle a ¼ cup of diced mango directly in the glass with the lime juice and a teaspoon of demerara sugar. Alternatively, add mango flesh to a food processor and blend until smooth.
  2. 2. Choose your sweetener. Because of the mango’s sweetness, Mango Mojitos sometimes require less sugar during the drink’s construction. Sugar cane juice is the traditional sweetener for Mojitos, but simple syrup is a more accessible alternative. Some Mojito recipes call for muddling confectioners’ sugar or superfine sugar with fresh lime juice.
  3. 3. Add fizz. For a twist on the traditional Cuban cocktail ratio, add levity and bubbles with club soda, ginger beer, or tonic water.

Ingredients

  1. 1

In a highball glass, stir together the mint leaves, lime juice, rum, and mango nectar.

  2. 2

Add crushed ice or ice cubes until the glass is about halfway full.

  3. 3

Using a bar spoon, pull some of the mint up from the bottom of the glass while swizzling the liquid and ice. Be careful not to bruise or tear the mint; likewise, don’t agitate the mix too vigorously.

  4. 4

Top off the highball glass with plenty of crushed ice, and insert a straw.

  5. 5

Collect the reserved sprigs and place them tightly in your palm. Lightly brush them with your opposite hand until they are upright and uniform. For an extra aromatic effect, slap the mint bouquet against the back end of your opposite hand.

  6. 6

Insert the bouquet in the ice next to the straw, along with a lime wedge or two.
