What Is a Love Language?

A love language is a way of communicating and receiving love. Dr. Gary Chapman, an author and family counselor, first introduced the concept of love languages in 1992 with the New York Times–bestselling book The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts. Not all love languages involve spoken or written words, but different kinds of behavior, like giving gifts and spending quality time together. Understanding your love language can help you build and maintain healthy relationships with the people you love. Love languages are particularly important for romantic relationships.

What Is Your Love Language?

To identify your own love language, consider how you experience love and express affection to the people you love. You might have a primary language or different love languages for giving and receiving. Complete a questionnaire to find your love language, or ask yourself a series of questions to determine what makes you feel validation. It might be receiving gifts, a warm caress, spending time together, or hearing your significant other say, “I love you.” Knowing your love language preferences and those of your loved ones can help you express love and admiration toward one another.
