What Is a Longitudinal Study?
A longitudinal study is a type of observational study that analyzes cause-and-effect relationships between variables and participants over a long period of time. Longitudinal studies can last weeks, months, or even decades depending on the goals of the researchers. Some studies stretch so far they can cover the entire lifespans of a select group of participants.
3 Types of Longitudinal Study
When it comes to longitudinal study design, there are multiple approaches you can consider. Here are three of the most common:
- 1. Cohort study: In this form of prospective study, researchers choose a cohort of participants from the same demographic. This can include age, race, sex, gender, or a different signifier. The goal of a cohort study is to measure the effects of experimental variables on a specific type of person or group of people rather than on a wide array of participants from different demographics.
- 2. Panel study: Some researchers might use a panel study to analyze people from a wide array of different identities and backgrounds over a long period of time. In this type of research design methodology, scientists or psychologists reach out to people from multiple demographics (rather than a single group) to compare their responses to external factors.
- 3. Retrospective study: Due to the huge amount of recorded data available on all different types of subjects, it’s possible to conduct longitudinal studies on a retroactive basis. In retrospective studies, researchers comb through resources such as old medical records, historical information, and so on to track the responses of different groups to unique variables in the past.
Longitudinal Study Example
Suppose a group of lung cancer specialists want to find out whether quitting smoking early in life can lower a former smoker’s risk profile for the disease in the future. They could conduct a longitudinal survey by choosing smoking as a key risk factor or predictor of the disease developing. They would then reach out to people who quit smoking in their late twenties and early thirties, as well as people who continued to smoke well into their fifties and sixties.
Over the course of years, the researchers would check in with research questions to determine if the participants have developed any signs of the disease. By comparing the two groups against each other over a long period of time, the researchers would get a better idea of whether or not quitting smoking earlier in life does cut back on the risk of developing lung cancer later in life.
Longitudinal Studies vs. Cross-Sectional Studies
The main difference between longitudinal and cross-sectional studies has to do with time. Longitudinal researchers check in with participants over various time intervals to create their datasets. In contrast, cross-sectional studies are a real-time type of research that focuses on collating data around a specific single point in time. Both still take in data from multiple different people—it’s just a matter of how long the study continues.
Pros of a Longitudinal Study
Longitudinal studies come with plenty of positives. Consider these benefits of using the longitudinal research method:
- Collection of large amounts of data: At a quantitative level, the data collection process for longitudinal studies will yield an extremely large amount of information. Since the studies take place over such a long period of time, researchers will build up a lot of understanding about their participants and people like them over time.
- Need for fewer participants: You can often rely on a smaller sample size for a longitudinal study than in other types of research. This is because the study focuses more on following a smaller group of people over time rather than attempting to gain as much information as possible from many people at once.
- Suitability to long periods of time: So long as you make sure to follow up regularly with your respondents, longitudinal studies can last for a long amount of time. They also help cut down on recall bias—or forgetting what happened in the past—because you track all the results in real time throughout the months or years of the study.
Cons of a Longitudinal Study
Longitudinal studies come with several drawbacks amid their many strengths. Here are key disadvantages of longitudinal studies:
- High costs: It takes a lot of time, money, and resources to collect data for a longitudinal study, although these will vary depending on the length of the sequence of events you plan to study. A longitudinal study over the course of weeks will cost less than one you plan to continue for years on end.
- Loss of participants: It’s common for some longitudinal studies to lose participants. This sort of participant attrition can happen for a variety of reasons, from disinterest to the death of an initial respondent. No matter what the reason, this can end up skewing the data of your study.
- Potential lack of validity: Longitudinal data requires you to follow the same people for a very long period of time. If people drop out of the research study, it can lead to the corruption of your dataset as a whole. This renders some longitudinal studies invalid after plenty of diligent work through no fault of the researchers.
