What Is Life Purpose?
Your life purpose is the mission statement for your existence. It’s the sense of meaning you rely on to propel you forward from one day to the next. It’s whatever makes you eager to spend another day working on self-improvement. It’s what serves as the baseline for joy in your life, but if times get hard, it’s also what keeps you fighting to stay positive and work on yourself.
Why Is It Important to Find Your Purpose in Life?
Without finding your purpose in life, you might spend your days adrift and unsure of yourself. Some people spend their entire lives feeling lost. Without a life purpose, it can be very difficult to decide what it will take for you to find the standard of well-being you deserve.
Keep in mind there’s a difference between finding your purpose in life and the purpose of life. Searching for the latter is a worthwhile goal, but it’s important to remember people have sought the meaning of life for centuries and still question what it might be. In the meantime, with the right amount of self-awareness, you can always define your own purpose according to what you love the most about life.
“We always have to have moments where we revisit the true value system and the true purpose without bells and whistles and without applause.” — Robin Arzón
5 Life Purpose Examples
Sometimes seeing what other people draw on for meaning can help you discover your own life purpose. Here are five examples worth considering:
- 1. Developing meaningful relationships: Maybe the friends and family members you have make your whole life worth living. Strive to find friends and colleagues who will challenge you to become the best version of yourself. Just remember to always balance your interpersonal relationships with self-care.
- 2. Exploring your spirituality: When it comes to finding your purpose in life, you can always turn inward. For some this might mean following a major religious tradition, but for others it doesn’t need to be that way. To live a happy life, you need to define your ethical values, find a source of meaning, and learn to love yourself and others. Cultivating your own spirituality can help you on all these fronts.
- 3. Raising a family: Getting married and having children can change your life for the better. For some, spending time with their own families is what gives them true purpose. Still, remember it’s also fine to find meaning in other areas of life. You can live very happily as a parent or without kids.
- 4. Serving your community: Sometimes the best way to lead a good life is to do what you can to improve the lives of others. As you pursue a more just, inclusive, and equitable world, you’ll live according to your own life purpose and help others discover their own.
- 5. Utilizing your creativity: If you’re an imaginative person, incorporating your creativity into your work can help you live your best life. Still, you don’t need to turn your artistic pursuits into a career path. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, utilizing your creativity will bring you an abiding sense of purpose and joy.
How to Find Your Life Purpose, According to Robin Arzón
It can feel daunting to try to find what motivates you at the most basic level. Here are just a few tips from bestselling author Robin Arzón about finding your life purpose:
- Ask what motivates you. Identify what brings you the most joy. “Purpose is our North Star,” Robin says. “It’s more than what’s in your bank account. It’s more than the praise that somebody might give you for doing a good job. It’s that intrinsic knowledge of why you do something.” If you can figure out why you do the things you do at the most basic level, you’re well on your way to finding your life purpose.
- Create mantras. In the short term, you can boil down your pursuit of purpose into a one-word mantra. “A meaningful mantra can be an internal trigger for just about anything,” Robin says, “for good, for positivity, for momentum, for agency, for the spark.” As you flesh out what you want out of life, you can move on to crafting a more meaningful mission statement.
- Decorate a vision board. Think of a vision board as an illustrated vision statement. “A vision board is a visual representation of a dream,” Robin says, “of a goal, of an intention, of a feeling of something you want to achieve in this next chapter of your life.” As you look at your completed board, you’ll have a better idea of your core purpose.
- Define your value set. To gain a clear sense of purpose, try to establish what your core personal values are. “We always have to have moments where we revisit our true value system and true purpose,” Robin says. To follow the correct life path, you need certain guidelines to stay on the straight and narrow.
- Journal your thoughts. A journal can be a valuable tool for self-reflection. “A journal can be a filter in a sense,” Robin says. “It can filter how we want to look at our ability to think, our ability to speak, our ability to write, our ability to move about the world.” As you write in it every day, you’ll become more self-aware.
- Practice mindfulness. Try to spend at least some amount of time in meditation every day. “My mantra practice really developed as a runner,” Robin says. “When I was training for marathons and ultramarathons, you’re out there for a lotta, lotta hours, oftentimes alone with just an internal conversation.” Incorporating mindfulness into daily life can be a boon to your mental health and wellness. As you clear your mind, take a deep breath and use it as an opportunity to explore who and what you are as an individual.
- Seek out like-minded people. Sometimes the best way to find your own sense of direction is to find people willing to take the journey alongside you. “When you are cowriting a story with someone,” Robin says, “consider doing a vision board with them about the thing that you’re building.” As you talk about your journeys together, you’ll gain a greater degree of self-confidence in your ability to find purpose.
