What Is Japanese Forest Grass?

Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra), which also goes by the name golden Japanese forest grass or hakone grass, is a perennial, ornamental grass that appears often in landscaping. The grass is native to the damp cliffs in the mountains of Japan, where its common name is urahagusa.

The perennial plant grows in cascading clumps and features long, arching leaves. Depending on the variety or cultivar, its foliage color could be green, green and white variegated, chartreuse, bright yellow, or yellow-green leaves. Growing conditions and sun exposure will affect foliage color.

Japanese forest grass is a slow grower and can be an ideal garden plant in shady areas. It can work well in woodland gardens or as a groundcover in shade gardens. You can plant it alongside flowering hostas, heuchera plants, or other blooming species in flower beds to provide contrasting color.

3 Types of Japanese Forest Grass

Several types of Japanese forest grass are commonly available at garden centers throughout spring to late summer. Here are three specific grasses you might come across:

  1. 1. 'Albostriata': This variegated cultivar features green leaves with white stripes. It's faster-growing than other varieties and can reach a height of three feet.
  2. 2. 'All Gold': A good grass option for smaller spaces, this cultivar has bright lime green leaves and is shorter than other related grasses. Its leaves also remain upright when the plant is mature.
  3. 3. 'Benikaze': The name of this Japanese forest grass cultivar translates to “red wind” because its leaves, which are green in summer, turn shades of red and gold in autumn as the weather cools.

4 Tips for Growing Japanese Forest Grass

Japanese forest grass is a low-maintenance, deer-resistant ornamental grass with few known pests. As a result, it can be a popular garden perennial in certain regions. If you are considering growing Japanese forest grass, here are a few care tips worth considering:

  1. 1. Consider your climate. The grass is hearty as a perennial but grows best in USDA Hardiness Zones four through nine.
  2. 2. Provide partial shade. The grass can withstand different types of sun exposure. In an area that receives part sun, part shade, the plant will display yellow-gold foliage. In full shade, the leaves turn a brighter green. Japanese forest grass can tolerate full sun but only in cool climates. With more sun, the leaves turn cream-colored. Avoid full sun in warmer climates, as this will turn the grass brown.
  3. 3. Use a rich soil. Plant your Japanese forest grass in well-draining soil rich in humus. The plant thrives in evenly moist soil that is neither too wet nor completely dry.
  4. 4. Water frequently. Keep the soil moist for your Japanese forest grass but don't overwater it. Use mulch to prevent moisture loss and water the plant frequently during the dry summer months.
