What Is an Ice Cream Cone?

An ice cream cone is a cone-shaped confection that holds frozen treats, namely ice cream. You can easily make homemade waffle cones, which are more flavorful than mass-produced cones.

A Brief History of Ice Cream Cones

Ice cream was invented in China in 3000 B.C., and it became popular in Europe in the seventeenth century. Over the centuries, the serving method of ice cream has evolved:

  • Frozen delicacy: Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ice cream was served in bowls and predominantly eaten by wealthy aristocrats.
  • Mass consumption: As ice cream became more accessible, an affordable way of serving it became necessary, leading to creating the edible cone. The first visual evidence of ice cream eaten in a cone comes from 1807, in a print of a woman eating ice cream outside at a café in Paris.
  • Cone machine: A machine for rolling ice cream cones was patented in 1912, and by the 1920s, many ice cream cones were mass-produced.

Waffle Cones vs. Sugar Cones: What’s the Difference?

Cones can be bowl-shaped, feature a chocolate dip or pretzels, but the two prominent cones are waffle cones and sugar cones.

  • Waffle cone: Waffle cones are golden brown, somewhat pliable, and have a classic conical shape.
  • Sugar cone: Sugar cones contain more sugar than waffle cones, making them firmer and more brittle. Sugar cones are often cylindrical—the flat-bottomed cone was popularized at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904.
