What Is Maca?
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a plant in the Brassica family closely related to cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, kale, and radishes. Native to the central Andes, maca is grown for its roots, not its leaves. In Peru, maca root is a common ingredient in porridges, empanadas, and soups. It can be fermented into beer or ground into flour for baked goods.
Outside of Peru, maca is typically sold as a supplement. Though it has long been part of the Andean diet and a staple of Peruvian traditional medicine, maca root powder only recently became popular as a so-called superfood with a host of alleged health benefits. Marketers claim that maca powder, or Peruvian ginseng, can balance hormones and energy levels. Although the health benefits of maca haven't been scientifically verified, the root is high in vitamin C. If you're considering taking maca as a supplement, talk to your doctor about potential side effects first.
How to Incorporate Maca Into Your Diet
Outside of the Andes, you can find maca powder at health food stores and online. It has a nutty flavor that pairs well with sweet flavors like caramel and cacao. Those who use maca powder as an adaptogen (herbal medicine) add it to smoothies, granola, overnight oats, chia seed pudding, and hot beverages like lattes and hot chocolate.
