What Is Bouclé Fabric?

Bouclé (from the French word boucler, which means “to curl”) is a heavy textile containing nubby, looped yarn, often in two different shades. Bouclé refers to both the yarn and the fabric made from the yarn. The multiuse textile is known for its interesting visual texture and super-soft comfort. Fabrics similar to bouclé include twill, which mirrors its visual texture, and chenille and cashmere, which mirror its softness.

What Is Bouclé Made From?

Bouclé is most often woven from traditional wool or mohair, but many designers have used the same woven technique with wool blends, merino, alpaca, linen, silk, cotton, and even rayon. While wool and mohair yarn are usually dry-clean only, more durable fabrics like linen and cotton bouclé can often hold up to an occasional machine wash.

How to Use Bouclé in Interior Design

In interior design, bouclé is commonly used for upholstery and throws. Bouclé is also prominent in the fashion world where the silky fabric is used to make textured shirting, bouclé wool coats, couture suiting, and other outerwear. Medium-weight bouclé fabric is extremely versatile and has a wide variety of home decor uses.

  1. 1. Soft seating: Bouclé is a great soft fabric that can be used to upholster sofas and chairs. The silky fabric pairs especially well with furniture pieces that have curved edges, since the soft curves complement the soft fabric.
  2. 2. Drapes: Liven up your window treatments with a bouclé design. The heaviness of the fabric will do a great job of filtering window light, and it’ll add a strong vertical line of texture and softness to your room.
  3. 3. Throws: Throw pillows and blankets made from bouclé can add an inviting layer of softness to beds and couches.
