What Is Facial Steaming?
Facial steaming is the practice of using warm water vapor to soothe and revivify your facial skin. You can use a facial steamer tool or simply hot water, towels, essential oils, and herbs. A weekly steaming regimen can thoroughly clean your facial skin, promote collagen and elastin production, and boost blood circulation to give you a natural glow. Facial steaming sessions with aromatherapy can encourage relaxation.
6 Benefits of Facial Steaming
A face steaming session can have the following benefits:
- 1. Cleanse: The heat and moisture of steam can help give your skin a deep, thorough cleansing. Steaming opens your pores, releasing the naturally occurring skin oil, sebum. Also, the buildup of dirt and impurities that lead to blackheads and breakouts in acne-prone skin can more easily wash away after steaming.
- 2. Boost: Steaming promotes the formation of collagen and elastin, which can help your skin’s firmness and elasticity, making you look younger.
- 3. Glow: Steaming increases blood circulation, and the additional blood flow can give you a more vibrant, healthy look.
- 4. Soothe: In addition to being good for sensitive skin, steaming your face is a great way to relax, breathe, and center yourself for five to ten minutes.
- 5. Hydrate: A facial steam promotes the production of natural skin oils, which can help hydrate your skin. Natural oils keep your skin soft, smooth, and flexible and help absorb topical products in your skincare regimen.
- 6. Breathe: The heat and moisture of facial steaming can help open up your sinuses, allowing you to breathe more deeply, and relieving the congestion from allergies and colds. Essential oils like eucalyptus can also ease the sinuses.
You can do facial steaming as often as once a week, although the right frequency for you will depend on your skin type and how your facial skin takes to the procedure.
3 Risks of Steaming Your Face
Before adding a face steaming procedure to your skincare routine, consult your dermatologist and consider the following risks:
- 1. Scalding: This is a kind of burn that can result from exposing the skin to high-temperature water or steam. Steam can get hotter than boiling water, so it’s essential to take precautions when steaming your face. Let the water sit for a few minutes to cool before putting your face near it.
- 2. Inflammation: If you have an inflammatory skin condition, such as eczema, rosacea, or dermatitis, steaming can irritate and exacerbate the symptoms. The high temperature of steam can dilate blood vessels, leading to increased inflammation.
- 3. Dryness: Steaming promotes the secretion of natural oils, leading to naturally hydrated skin, but people with exceptionally dry skin should proceed with caution, as this can irritate their condition.
How to Do a Steam Facial at Home
Doing a steam facial in the comfort of your own home can be a great way to relax and treat your facial skin. Follow the steps below to get great results with an at-home steam facial:
- 1. Cleanse your face. Wash your face with your favorite facial cleanser. Before steaming, you want your face to be free of dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells. The hot steam opens your pores, and dirt can get trapped, causing irritation and breakouts. You can also use a gentle exfoliating scrub as part of this step.
- 2. Gather your equipment. You’ll need about five cups of water, a kettle, a bowl, and a clean, soft towel. If you want to use any herbs or essential oils, such as lavender or tea tree oil, gather those as well.
- 3. Heat the water. Bring the water to a boil, remove it from the heat, then pour it into the bowl.
- 4. Add tea or oils to the water. If you use dried herbs or chamomile tea bags, add them to the boiling water and stir. If using essential oils, add a few drops to the water bowl. Let the water sit for a couple of minutes, so the steam temperature comes down to a safe level of 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the bowl of water on a flat surface in front of you.
- 5. Secure your hair. You want your whole face to receive the benefits of steaming, so tie your hair back securely.
- 6. Wear a towel around your head. Put the towel over your head, and let it drape around your shoulders, exposing your face.
- 7. Close your eyes. Keep your face about six inches from the surface of the water, adjusting as needed. You can close your eyes and breathe deeply to relax. The facial steaming session should be five to ten minutes.
- 8. Use a facial toner. After steaming, it’s essential to wipe your face down and apply toner to help clear away any additional impurities and buildup loosened by the steam. Some estheticians apply a face mask to remove additional impurities after steaming, which is an optional step for your home facial steam routine.
