A Brief Overview of Interviewing for a Job
A job interview is one of the final stages of the hiring process and one in which job candidates answer questions about themselves and their qualifications for the position. There are many types of interviews, including phone and video interviews, or a job interview process might involve meeting face-to-face with a hiring manager, recruiter, or representative from the company’s human resources (HR) department.
The interviewer clarifies details in the job description and asks the interviewee about previous work experience and applicable skills. You can use the interview as an opportunity to ask about the company, such as asking about the work environment and company culture. The hiring manager or recruiter may offer you the position at the end of the interview, but, in most cases, companies may want to conduct additional interviews or follow up with an email or phone call to make a job offer.
How to Start an Interview as the Job Candidate: 5 Tips
A successful interview can help you land your next job. Try these interview tips to help you put your best foot forward:
- 1. Prepare: A successful interview starts with preparation. Review the job posting to understand what the company wants in a candidate. Consider common interview questions, such as why you want the job, and prepare sample answers. Make sure your speaking voice is clear and projected, and your body language is positive—both are essential for making a strong first impression. Even if you are on the phone, minding your posture can help you feel confident.
- 2. Introduce yourself: If the interview is in person, make eye contact with your interviewer and greet them with a firm handshake. Whether in person or via phone or video, respond to their introduction by noting it’s a pleasure to meet them and repeat their name. Pleasantries like these are polite, build rapport, and—most importantly—help you to remember the interviewer's name.
- 3. Prepare a brief overview: One of the most common interview prompts is “Tell me about yourself.” Open-ended questions like these might seem daunting, but use them to summarize your past experience, your qualifications, and why you’re an ideal candidate for the job. Conclude by explaining how the job description meets your career goals.
- 4. Ask questions: A job interview is an opportunity for you to find if the company and role are the right fit for you, so come to the interview with a list of questions you want to ask. These questions should show sincere interest in the company, its business model, and the potential job offer in front of you. Asking questions shows that you read up on the company and that you care about what it does. Feel free to also ask about your potential coworkers or projects.
- 5. Follow up: Thank the recruiter or HR representative at the end of the interview. Be sure to get their contact information so you can follow up and send a thank-you note in a timely manner.
