A teaspoon is a standard measurement in cooking and baking. One teaspoon equals one third of a tablespoon and one forty-eighth of a cup. Teaspoons are typically part of a measuring spoon set, including a tablespoon, half teaspoon, quarter teaspoon, and eighth teaspoon.

How to Measure a Teaspoon Without a Measuring Spoon

If you’re in a kitchen that lacks measuring utensils, there are a few ways to approximate a teaspoon measurement:

  • Compare with spare change. For most dry ingredients, you can measure an approximate amount on your palm using the following references: a teaspoon mound is a little larger than a quarter; a half teaspoon is about the size of a nickel; and a quarter teaspoon is roughly the size of a dime. You should be close to the right amounts if you eyeball a side-by-side comparison.
  • Fill a kitchen spoon. You can use a regular spoon from the cupboard to approximate a teaspoon. Most kitchens will have two sizes of serving spoons: the larger of the two, which you use to eat cereal, will approximate a tablespoon, while the smaller size, like the kind you might use to stir tea or coffee, will be close to a teaspoon.
  • Use the pinch method. Using your index finger, middle finger, and thumb to grasp dry ingredients, like salt or baking powder, will measure approximately an eighth of a teaspoon. If you need a full teaspoon, use eight pinches of the ingredients.
  • Weigh the ingredients. You can use a scale to convert volumetric ingredients to mass ingredients. Sometimes, this may also entail the conversion of Imperial to metric measurements, but most modern electronic kitchen scales will convert the units for you. Having a conversion chart is best, but you can start by knowing that a teaspoon of water is .17 ounces, which is also the weight of a teaspoon of granulated sugar, conveniently enough.

4 Tips for Measuring a Teaspoon

Simple recipes can be a challenge when you lack the right tools, like measuring spoons or measuring cups. Keep the following guidelines in mind to yield the desired result from your kitchen project, even without measuring spoons:

  • Use precise measurements for baking. The ratios, especially for baking soda, salt, and certain spices, have to be exact in baking. There’s less room for error, so it’s best to use the most accurate measuring tools you have on hand. As professional bakers do, weigh ingredients if you can, then use a visual approximation if there’s no other choice.
  • Consider wet and dry ingredients. In the Imperial unit and customary US systems, liquid ingredients are measured in fluid ounces, usually shortened to ounces in recipes. An Imperial fluid ounce weighs the same as an ounce of mass, but the measurements between wet and dry ingredients differ with the US system.
  • Modify the measurements. You might encounter recipes that call for a heaping teaspoon of an ingredient or a rounded teaspoon. Heaping means that you’re making as high a mound as you can in the spoon, or whichever improvised measuring device you’re using, and a rounded teaspoon is somewhat smaller.
  • Experiment with recipes. Aspiring home cooks often follow recipes to the letter. Once you’ve gained more experience, you’ll find that there is usually room for flexibility, especially in cooking. You’ll eventually add a few extra pinches of spices with confidence.
