What Is Guacamole?
Guacamole is a Mexican avocado dip that can be prepared in a variety of ways. Some cooks make a simple guacamole of avocados mashed with lime and lemon juice and a little bit of sea salt; others add spices like cumin and vegetables like diced tomatoes and white onion. The name “guacamole” comes from the Nahuatl ahuacamolli, or ahuacatl (avocado) molli (sauce).
4 Ways to Serve Guacamole
Guacamole and tortilla chips is a perfect appetizer—especially when served alongside a margarita—but there are plenty of other ways to use guacamole.
- 1. On nachos: Spread tortilla chips on a baking sheet and top with veggies, chorizo (or vegan sausage), and a melting cheese such as queso Oaxaca. Place under the broiler for a few minutes until the cheese is melted, then top with fresh ingredients: guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and fresh cilantro.
- 2. On tacos: For taco night, set out an assortment of salsas and dips, such as a smoky chipotle-sour cream sauce and a bowl of your best guacamole.
- 3. On fresh tortillas: For an authentic guacamole experience, make your own tortillas, and serve them hot and fresh alongside a bowl of homemade guacamole as a side dish or snack.
- 4. On toast: Use leftover guacamole to make quick avocado toast. Top with a boiled egg, if desired.
How to Store Guacamole to Keep It Fresh
The difficulty with storing homemade guacamole is that avocados tend to oxidize (turn brown) when exposed to air. The best way to avoid this is to press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole, which will minimize its exposure to oxygen. Guacamole will keep in the refrigerator this way for a few days. If your guacamole does turn brown, don't worry—it will still taste fine.
