What Are Blondies?

Blondies—short for blonde brownies—are a baked dessert that omits the cocoa powder in traditional brownies. Sweet, chewy, and buttery blondies look more like cookie bars than brownies, especially with the addition of chocolate chips.

4 Ingredients to Mix Into Blondies

Just as it’s common to mix additional ingredients into brownies, it’s popular to do the same for blondie recipes. Here are four ideas for add-ins the next time you make blondies:

  1. 1. Chocolate chips: Turn your blondies into chocolate chip cookie bars by adding white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, or semisweet chocolate chips for additional sweetness and flavor.
  2. 2. Cream cheese: Sweeten cream cheese with sugar or maple syrup, and whip it until it’s light and fluffy. Swirl the cream cheese into the blondie mixture in the baking dish. The result will be similar to a cheesecake swirl blondie, but you won’t have to make a cheesecake batter.
  3. 3. Dried fruit: While fresh fruit releases moisture during the cooking process, dried fruit can add a tart flavor and chewy texture to blondies without affecting the dessert’s moisture content. Mix dried cranberries, cherries, dates, or figs right into the blondie batter.
  4. 4. Nuts: Roasted and salted nuts—such as pistachios, pecans, walnuts, and peanuts—add crunch to blondies. Mix nuts into the batter or chop them up and sprinkle them over the mixture before you bake your dessert.
