What Is a Breakfast Burrito?

A breakfast burrito consists of a flour tortilla tightly wrapped around a filling of various American breakfast ingredients. Breakfast burritos typically feature bacon or sausage, potatoes, eggs, veggies, and salsa, but you can also make them with vegetarian or vegan ingredients. Breakfast burritos don’t usually contain conventional burrito ingredients like rice and black beans. However, you can use a hybrid of Mexican and American ingredients for a southwestern or “Tex-Mex” style breakfast burrito.

What Type of Ingredients Are in a Breakfast Burrito?

You can create a breakfast burrito using the breakfast foods of your preference. Some common inclusions are:

  • Eggs: Scrambled eggs are the defining ingredient of a well-rounded breakfast burrito.
  • Potatoes: Seasoned potatoes are a popular breakfast burrito ingredient. You can add diced or shredded potatoes to fill out your burrito.
  • Cheese: Tangy cheeses like gouda and cheddar cheese can add a sharp, buttery flavor to your burrito.
  • Peppers: If you want to add a veggie component to your meal, sautéed bell peppers are a great option that can add another layer of flavor and texture to your burrito.
  • Meat: Bacon, breakfast sausage, and ham are the most common meat proteins for breakfast burritos.
  • Sauces: Sauces can add flavor and moisture to breakfast burritos. Mexican crema, sour cream, salsa, ketchup, or hot sauce can give your burrito a zesty finish.

Ingredients

  1. 1

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Place the strips of bacon into the pan. Turn the bacon as needed, cooking until the bacon is crispy. Carefully remove the bacon from the pan, and set aside. Do not discard the bacon grease. If you are preparing a vegetarian breakfast burrito, cook the potatoes in 2 tablespoons of olive oil for this step.

  2. 2

Add the chopped potatoes to the hot skillet, then season with salt and pepper. Cook the potatoes in the bacon grease, turning them over occasionally until each side is crispy. Add paprika or cayenne for a spicy kick.

  3. 3

Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil to a separate skillet. Place on medium heat, then add the eggs to the skillet and scramble lightly, about 2 minutes.

  4. 4

While the eggs are cooking, use a griddle or gas burner on low heat to warm your flour tortilla, about 1 minute.

  5. 5

Place your warm flour tortilla on a serving plate. Lay the two strips of bacon on your tortilla, add the eggs, then the potatoes.

  6. 6

Sprinkle red onions and your choice of cheese on top.

  7. 7

Add condiments like hot sauce or ketchup to your preference.

  8. 8

With your ingredients in place, fold in the two ends where the filling reaches the edge of the burrito. Then, fold one of the free ends over the filling and continue to roll until the burrito is fully wrapped.
