Even though the Bramble was invented relatively recently, in 1984, it quickly became a classic gin cocktail. It features crème de mûre, a blackberry-flavored liqueur, and its name is a reference to blackberry bushes, known as brambles.

The Origins of the Bramble Cocktail

In 1984 in London, bartender Dick Bradsell, then the manager of Fred's Club in Soho, invented the Bramble cocktail. Bradsell got inspired to create this modern classic when a producer brought some crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur) to the bar for him to try. The taste of the blackberry liqueur reminded Bradsell of the blackberry brambles on the Isle of Wight, where he picked berries as a child. Inspired, Bradsell developed the cocktail recipe that has since become a classic. The Bramble is based off the Gin Sour (London dry gin, fresh lemon juice, and sugar syrup) poured over crushed ice with a drizzle of crème de mûre and served in an Old Fashioned glass.
