In the 1980s, skateboarder Rodney Mullen brought about the age of flip tricks, which revolutionized the world of skateboarding and paved the way for skateboarding legends like Tony Hawk and Bob Burnquist. The tre flip is a slightly more advanced trick that most skateboarders learn after getting the basic skateboarding tricks down.

What Is a Tre Flip?
The tre flip, also known as the 360 kickflip or 360 flip, is a skateboarding trick invented by Rodney Mullen. The tre flip is a combination of a backside 360 pop shove-it and a kickflip. When executed correctly, the board spins 360 degrees mid-air, while also flipping 360 degrees along its longitudinal axis.
How to Tre Flip
The tre flip is a mashup of two tricks, and requires precise timing and weight balance:
- 1. Get the right foot position. Position your feet as you would for a kickflip, but with your back foot more in the “pocket” of your tail.
- 2. Pop and flick. With your back foot, pop your tail down and use your toes to flick towards your heel side with enough force so it rotates 360 degrees in a backside direction.
- 3. Jump high. Just after you pop your board, flick forward and to the heel side with your front foot to start the board flipping, like you would when performing a kickflip. Be sure to jump high enough that the board has time to both rotate and flip a full 360 degrees.
- 4. Catch the board. As the board is nearing 360 degrees rotation and flip, catch it with your front foot to settle it, then catch it with your back foot and bring it down. However, when starting out, don’t worry about catching your board and landing at first. Focus on getting the flick-outs right so your board consistently rotates and flips 360 degrees.
