What Are Kiwis?

Kiwis, or kiwifruit, are a type of berry fruit. Kiwis are oval-shaped and the size of a chicken egg. The skin of the kiwi is brown and fuzzy, and the inside is green or yellow. The flesh of the fruit is sweet, tart, and juicy. The fruit is usually eaten raw by itself or in a fruit salad, used in marinades, or as a garnish for sweeter desserts, such as ice cream or pavlovas. Kiwi skin and seeds are also edible. Kiwis are rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium, carbohydrates, calcium, and fiber.

Kiwis are also known as Chinese gooseberries because the fruit is native to China. Kiwis were also transported to New Zealand, where many of today’s kiwis are grown

When Are Kiwis Ready to Eat?

Kiwis grow on a vine in a cluster, and they are ready to be picked and eaten when the flesh slightly gives when pressed. Kiwis will continue to soften and ripen after being picked, so you should consume kiwis immediately after purchasing.

4 Ways to Cut a Kiwi

Kiwis are easy to cut because of their compact size. Store cut kiwis in the fridge in an airtight container, and consume them within two to three days. Check out these four simple ways to cut a kiwi using different kitchen tools:

  1. 1. Place the kiwi on a cutting board and slice off the ends of the kiwi with a small paring knife. Stand the kiwi on one of the flat ends and slice along the sides of the kiwi, slicing off the fuzzy skin, and then slice the green flesh however you like.
  2. 2. Use a vegetable peeler to peel the skin off the entire kiwi, and then slice the peeled kiwi in circles, slices, or cubes.
  3. 3. Slice off the ends of the kiwi with a sharp knife, then take a small spoon and dig it into the kiwi where the fruit meets the skin. Rotate the spoon around the fruit until it has made a complete circle, and the whole kiwi fruit should then easily slide out.
  4. 4. Slice the kiwi in half and scoop out the kiwi fruit with a spoon.
