What Is a Dog Kennel?

A dog kennel is an enclosed space for keeping a dog for a limited tine. When considering a DIY project for the kenneling of your dog, it’s essential to keep in mind that dogs need space and movement for their emotional and physical well-being. Dog kennels vary in size, from as small as dog crates to large enclosements known as dog runs. Some stationary kennels offer dogs a moderate play space, while other portable versions can transport dogs.

How to Build a Dog Kennel

To build a dog kennel, start with a solid idea and plan your project. Browse different design ideas, decide the primary use for the dog kennel, and consider how often you plan to utilize the space. When you have your plans together, make a list of the necessary materials and tools. If you plan to use wood, prepare a cut list to ensure you get the correct amount of wood.

3 Types of Dog Kennels

The materials and tools for your DIY dog kennel will depend on the intended use of the kennel. Consider the following types of materials for dog kennels:

  1. 1. Chain link: A chain-link fence is one of the most common, durable, and secure options for a dog kennel. Chain link is made of thick, galvanized steel wires linked in an interlocking pattern and is suitable for an outdoor dog kennel. Depending on the height of the walls, you might not need a roof.
  2. 2. Welded wire: This material, which usually comes on rolls of varying sizes, is excellent for keeping your dog where you want them to stay. You can fasten the wire to poles, staves, or other structural elements, making it highly customizable.
  3. 3. Wooden kennel: Wood is a common and versatile material for dog kennels. Wood is relatively easy to work with, and you can use reclaimed or found wood, such as that from discarded pallets.

4 Tips for Building a Dog Kennel

When you’re making plans to build a dog kennel, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. 1. Make it the correct size. Your dog should have enough room to move around. While some kennels are no bigger than a dog house, they at least need to allow the dog space to turn around, stand up, and stretch out. Before you start, know your dog’s specific size, and decide if you want to give the dog space to run around or simply curl up and rest.
  2. 2. Consider the climate. This factor will also depend on the intended use of your kennel. If it’s hot and humid where you live, and you plan for your dog to use a solid kennel year-round, ventilation is essential. Some ambitious owners install small air conditioning units in their kennels. Conversely, if you live in a colder climate, insulation and a good, sturdy roof will be necessary.
  3. 3. Think about flooring options. The foundation and kennel floor are just as necessary as the walls and the roof, mainly if your dog is a digger. Some DIY dog runs feature a simple dirt floor, while others have concrete, which is expensive, gets hot in warmer climates, and allows for easy clean-up. You can also install a gravel floor, but a simple wooden floor can suffice in small dog kennels.
  4. 4. Have the right tools. Whichever design or material you choose, having the right tools for the job is imperative for a successful DIY dog kennel. If you’re working with wood, a circular saw will be useful, and a miter saw will help for more precise cuts. Be sure to have sandpaper for finishing and a tape measure to get accurate dimensions. A post-hole digger will come in handy for placing the corner posts, whether wood or metal.
