Vertical skateboarding, also known as “vert skating,” emerged on the skating scene over 40 years ago, and was revolutionized by legends like Tony Hawk. Starting with basic skate tricks performed in empty swimming pools, this skating style eventually evolved into the high-flying and gravity-defying tricks seen all over skateparks, half-pipes, and mini-ramps today, with moves like the lipslide, backside ollie, and the Madonna. If you’re a more experienced skateboarder and are ready to take your tricks to the next level, you may be ready to try a bluntslide to backside 180.
Learn From the Best
What Is a Bluntslide to Backside 180?
A bluntslide to backside 180 is an advanced vert trick that combines a frontside or backside tailslide with a 180-degree spin. Bluntslide to backside 180 is a skateboarding trick where a skater comes up the ramp at an angle, shifting their board back in the opposite direction, before sliding on the coping and performing a 180-degree spin. The key to this skateboarding trick is how you slide on your tail and how much weight you put on it. Keeping the heels of both your front foot and back foot off the back of the board is the best way to get that balance.
3 Trick Tips for New Skaters
Bluntslide to backside 180 is an advanced skate trick. New skaters will need to learn and master a couple other basic skate tricks before trying the bluntslide to backside 180:
- 1. Learn to tailslide. New skaters who want to learn how to bluntslide to backside 180 should start by learning how to tailslide—a skateboard trick where the skater slides the back tail of the skateboard deck along a ledge or railing.
- 2. Learn to bluntslide. After mastering tailslides, beginning skaters should learn how to perform a bluntslide—a trick where a skater slides both the wheels and tails on top of the coping.
- 3. Practice. Practice the frontside bluntslide (fs bluntslide) or backside bluntslide (bs bluntslide) until you feel confident enough to hit the ramp to try a bluntslide to backside 180.
How to Bluntslide to Backside 180
The bluntslide to backside 180 is an advanced skateboard slide trick that takes a lot of tenacity, timing, and balance. Much like the smith grind, crooked grind, and frontside tailslide, this trick becomes a bit easier to do once you’ve got your basic boardslides and noseslide techniques down. Here’s a step-by-step guide to performing a bluntslide to backside 180:
- 1. Gain momentum and lift your heels. Go up the ramp at an angle with just enough speed to clear the coping with your back truck. Approach the coping with your heels off the board to account for a natural forward shift that occurs when sliding.
- 2. Lift your front truck. As you shoot up, lift your front truck slightly so it and your back truck clear the coping and your tail makes contact with the coping.
- 3. Rotate the board. Once you’ve cleared the coping, use your front foot to rotate the nose of your board back until it’s perpendicular to the coping. (Rotate your board clockwise if you’re goofy-footed, counterclockwise if you’re regular-footed.)
- 4. Balance your weight. Keep your weight back and make sure you’re hanging your heels off the back of your board while briefly sliding on your tail.
- 5. Swing your shoulder. To perform the 180 up off the coping, swing your lead shoulder in a backside direction while lifting up your board. This will carry you and your board around and forward back down into the ramp.
