What Does It Mean to Be Happy With Yourself?

Being happy with yourself is the practice of feeling satisfied with your identity, progress, and situation in the present moment. Happy people still have problems or growth opportunities in their lives, but they allow themselves to feel proud and comfortable with themselves right now.

How to Be Happy With Yourself: 6 Tips for a Happy Life

Here are a few tips to help you embrace a feeling of happiness:

  1. 1. Engage in physical activity. Feeling happy is a holistic practice that includes your body as well as your mind. Physical activity—whether that’s a rigorous full-body workout routine, biking, or a simple walk outdoors—helps increase your dopamine levels and encourages you to feel more in tune with your body in the present moment. In addition, physical activity offers a wide array of health benefits, including a strengthened immune system, lower blood pressure, stronger muscles, improved cardiovascular ability, and more.
  2. 2. Focus on others. It may seem counterintuitive, but one way to feel happier with yourself is to focus on other people. Building a strong, healthy support system of friends, family members, and loved ones can help you feel grounded in the present and prepared for anything that comes your way. In addition to social connection, being kind to others and engaging in service can help you focus your attention away from yourself. If you sometimes struggle with being overly self-critical, helping others can help you spend more of your energy looking outward and result in a feeling of fulfillment and impact, boosting your overall happiness.
  3. 3. Identify and analyze your negative thoughts. Happy people still have negative thoughts or bad days, but one key to happiness is understanding the sources of these negative moments. If you find yourself feeling down about a particular aspect of your life, pause and consider these feelings and their source. Examine if this is a problem that you can solve on your own or if you need outside help. Also, determine if this feeling stems from a particular thought pattern or habit. Adopt a growth mindset and reframe these negative moments as opportunities to learn and improve. If you have a hard time getting this perspective on your own life, consider consulting a licensed therapist or mental health professional.
  4. 4. Meditate. Being happy with yourself requires that you feel anchored in the present moment rather than the past or future. To help ground yourself in the present, consider small steps like incorporating meditation or a mindfulness routine. Try spending time deep breathing or doing body scan meditations to practice mindfulness on a daily basis.
  5. 5. Practice regular gratitude. A key foundation of feeling happy with yourself and your current situation is feeling grateful for what you already have. Try simple ways to practice gratitude, like keeping a gratitude journal or making a list of things you’re happy to have and posting it in a prominent place in your home. Remember to include inward traits you’re grateful for—appreciating things about yourself is the key to healthy self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-love.
  6. 6. Remember short-term goals. While long-term goals are a great way to keep yourself on course, focusing too much on the long term can eclipse the present and make you feel as though you’re just waiting for your life to begin. In addition to identifying your long-term goals, outline a few short-term goals—even simple things like giving yourself a compliment every day—to help yourself live a happier life right now.
