How Do Aerosol Cans Work? The Mechanics of Spray Paint

Spray paints are typically contained in aerosol cans, which work by transforming liquefied paint and gas into a fine mist. The liquid product inside the can changes to gas when you press the can’s nozzle, releasing air and changing the air pressure inside of the can.

What Is Spray Paint?

Spray paints are liquid paints that are contained in an aerosol can. A can of spray paint comes with a button on the top that dispenses paint when you press down on it. Aerosol spray cans work by using compressed gas as a liquid propellant. Aerosol spray paint is an alternative method of painting to using traditional paint brushes and comes in many different colors and finishes, from high gloss to matte.

How Does Spray Paint Work?

Spray paint cans typically use aerosol to dispense paint in a fine mist. Other products that use aerosol in a similar way include hairspray, spray deodorant, or insecticides. Aerosol products typically come inside an aluminum or metal can with compressed gas that becomes a vapor when the can's nozzle is opened and the air pressure inside the can is released. Here is an overview of how aerosol cans work, specifically when it comes to spray paint.

  1. 1. The paint and gas are added into the can in liquid form. Inside a spray paint can, liquid paint is mixed with pressurized gas. Inside the can, the compressed gas remains in liquid form when it is at room temperature.
  2. 2. Shaking helps to mix the liquefied gas and paint together. Most spray paint cans also include a ball bearing inside. When you shake up a can of spray paint, the ball bearing rattles around helping to mix the liquefied gas and the liquid paint so that when the nozzle is opened, the gas carries particles of the paint up through the dip tube and out of the nozzle.
  3. 3. Pressure is released when the nozzle is pressed. When you press the nozzle of a spray paint can, it opens the can’s valve system. Some cans have “male” valve systems, meaning that they have a small stem on the valve to attach a “female” nozzle to. Other cans have “female” valve systems, meaning that they do not have a stem, and they must use a “male” nozzle that contains a stem. Pressing the nozzle of the can changes the air pressure inside which causes the liquefied gas to boil and become a vapor. Pressing the nozzle also siphons gas through the nozzle hole, releasing the vaporized paint and creating the “spray” effect.

9 Types of Spray Paint Nozzles

There are many different types of spray paint nozzles that change the spread of your spray paint. Here are some of the most popular types of spray paint caps.

  1. 1. Female caps: Female caps are a broad category of cap containing a hole at the base, which attaches to the stem at the valve of a “male” spray paint can.
  2. 2. Male caps: Male caps are a broad category of cap containing a stem at the base, which fits into the hole in the valve of a “female” spray paint can.
  3. 3. Thin caps: Thin caps are used to spray thin lines and highlights in spray paint art. Types of thin caps include AP Micro, Gray Dot, MSS, and GSS.
  4. 4. Outline caps: Outline caps are medium-sized spray caps that are typically used to paint clear solid lines. Types of outline caps include NYO, Universal, SBN, and G01.
  5. 5. Fat caps: Fat caps are used to cover and fill in large areas of canvas. Types of fat caps include Rusto, NYF, Blue Dot, and Orange Dot.
  6. 6. Super fat caps: Super fat caps are used to fill in the largest canvases, because they have the most spread. Types of super fat caps include Pink, Euro Fat, Silver, and Astro.
  7. 7. Calligraphy caps: A calligraphy cap is a nozzle with a flattened edge used for painting calligraphy lines. Types of calligraphy caps include Red Callig and Black Callig.
  8. 8. Needle cap: A needle cap is a long, needle-shaped nozzle that is used to create a splatter effect.
  9. 9. Stencil cap: Stencil caps are nozzles with a fine point hole used for very fine detail.
