What Is a Guava Margarita?

A Guava Margarita is much like the traditional Margarita—using tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice to create its unique flavor—but with the added ingredient of guava nectar. This thick, sweet concentrated juice is from the guava, a delicious tropical fruit that has a sweet, floral flavor and (in some cases) light pink flesh.

3 Essential Guava Margarita Ingredients

A Guava Margarita is only as good as the quality of the ingredients you use, so to get the best results, opt for the best ingredients you can find.

  1. 1. Tequila: Great cocktails need a foundation of quality liquor. Tequila, made from the agave plant, has a distinct, somewhat herbaceous flavor that goes well with a sweet, fruity liqueur. A nice silver tequila highlights the guava flavor in a Guava Margarita. If you’re looking for something a little darker and more complex, you can go for a good reposado or añejo (gold) tequila. This can complement the subtle floral guava flavor nicely.
  2. 2. Lime: For the best results, skip the Margarita mix. Freshly squeezed lime juice is the key to making the best Margarita. Keep extra limes on hand for garnish.
  3. 3. Guava nectar: If you can, try to purchase guava nectar, which is thicker and more flavorful than guava juice. The latter will do in a pinch, but to achieve the unique, delectable guava flavor, nectar is your best bet. If the juice is all you can get, try to get one hundred percent juice without added sweeteners.

Optional Ingredients for Guava Margaritas

While not essential, these items can help add a little extra flavor and heighten the impact of the presentation.

  1. 1. Simple syrup: An even mixture of sugar and water, simple syrup will give your Margarita a little extra sweetness.
  2. 2. Agave syrup: Agave syrup is a good replacement for simple syrup, and although it has a fairly neutral flavor, it can feel a bit more appropriate for a tequila-based cocktail.
