What Is a Dragon Fruit Margarita?

A Dragon Fruit Margarita is a cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and dragon fruit. This tropical fruit is also known as pitaya, pitahaya, or strawberry pear. Some varieties of dragon fruit have white, purple, or red flesh with a sweet taste like a kiwi or a pear. To make a Dragon Fruit Margarita, puree the dragon fruit flesh and combine it with tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice in a cocktail shaker. You can also blend the ingredients to make a frozen cocktail.

4 Dragon Fruit Margarita Ingredients

To make a Dragon Fruit Margarita, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  1. 1. Dragon fruit: You can use any kind of dragon fruit, but a red dragon fruit will yield a brightly-colored cocktail. Put the dragon fruit flesh in a blender, then strain the juice and discard the solids.
  2. 2. Lime: Skip the Margarita mix. Freshly squeezed lime juice is the key to making the best cocktail. Keep extra limes on hand for garnish.
  3. 3. Tequila: Reposado tequila is a great choice for a classic Margarita, but blanco tequila (aka silver tequila) has a neutral flavor that works best for a Dragon Fruit Margarita.
  4. 4. Orange liqueur: An orange-flavored triple-sec like Cointreau provides sweetness to balance the lime juice. You can also use Grand Marnier (an orange-flavored Cognac), agave syrup, or simple syrup for sweetener.
