What Is a Double Bed?
A double bed is a mattress type that sleeps one or two people. A double bed measures 54 inches in width (or four feet, six inches) and 75 inches in length—the same measurements as a full mattress or full-size bed. In the mattress world, the terms “double” and “full” are interchangeable, though “full” is more frequently used by mattress manufacturers and retailers in the United States. A double bed is bigger than a twin-size mattress (38 inches x 75 inches) and smaller than a queen-size bed (60 inches by 80 inches).
6 Factors to Consider Before Buying a Double Bed
There are many factors to consider when shopping for a mattress size:
- 1. Accommodations. While a double bed is generally a good choice for most standard-size bedrooms, it also helps to consider the room’s usage. A double bed will work well in a master bedroom, where extra space is necessary for furniture or rooms with multiple uses. A double bed also makes a great daybed for guest rooms and is a good choice for studio apartments and dorm rooms, where available space is at a premium.
- 2. Frame size. The make and style of bed frame you own will also factor into purchasing a double bed. A standard double-bed frame, such as a traditional metal rail frame or a platform bed frame with wood slats, will add two to five inches of space to the size of your mattress. Bed frames with a headboard and footboard made from solid wood, or covered in fabric, like an upholstered or wingback headboard, can add between three to five inches or more to the space allotted for your mattress.
- 3. Occupants. At 54 inches by 75 inches, a double bed is likely the best option for a single person who wants a bit more room than a twin bed allows. A double-size bed can be spacious enough for one person, especially if they’re less than six feet tall. A double mattress can accommodate a second person, though it may feel cramped for both sleepers. Double beds are also good options for children and teenagers, who may need a mattress that will remain comfortable as they continue to grow. An alternative for single people with limited space is the twin XL, which measures 38 inches by 80 inches.
- 4. Price. A double bed may cost anywhere between $200 and $2,000, depending on the brand and materials. Retailers may offer mattresses with more expensive “luxury” materials, like latex foam or copper-infused foam.
- 5. Spatial requirements. When buying a mattress, take into consideration the space you have in your bedroom, as well as any bedroom furniture you may own. Leave at least two to three feet of space on all sides of the bed (except for whatever side is against a wall). A double bed will be a good choice for a room that measures 10 feet wide by 10 feet long.
- 6. Use. A double mattress can be used for adjustable beds and bunk beds. A double bed is the largest size available for bunk beds; when it comes to adjustable beds, mattress size is less important than flexibility and durability.
