What Is a Headboard?

A headboard is a panel or flat surface between the wall and your bed, sometimes attached to the bed frame. Headboards are a visual focal point and can play a significant role in the look and style of a room. Historically, wood headboards helped provide insulation from the drafts that could develop in spaces made of brick or stone during the colder months. Modern headboards are more of an aesthetic piece of furniture than a functional one, increasing design possibilities.

4 Types of Headboards

Headboards come in a wide variety of materials and styles. Below are some DIY headboard materials, many of which are budget-friendly and adaptable to your particular bedroom makeover plans:

  1. 1. Wood: Wooden headboards, whether they are a professional or DIY headboard project, are among the most popular. Wood is an excellent thermal insulator and comes in different colors, textures, and finishes. Some of the more minimalist designs start with a simple piece of plywood. Reclaimed wood is another good material to use: refinished panels, repurposed pallets, or even old shutters can make a rustic headboard. You don’t need to be an expert in woodworking to create a wooden headboard; often, a few essential tools are all that’s required.
  2. 2. Fabric: A fabric or upholstery headboard, while less sturdy than wood, offers a wide range of possibilities, from boho to high-end. It can be as simple as hanging a textile from a curtain rod above your bed or a fabric panel with sewn ruffles. You can also repurpose a quilt or tapestry as a DIY headboard.
  3. 3. Leather and faux leather: Leather can create an upscale headboard. (Using raw material leather is a more affordable option than tanned leather.) You can use leather to create a tufted headboard, such as with diamond tufted patterns. If you want the look and texture of leather without using leather, you can use synthetic materials like vinyl.
  4. 4. Other materials: When it comes to headboards, especially of the DIY variety, the only limitation is the sturdiness of the material and your own imagination. You can make headboards from acoustic foam, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), macrame, heavy-duty cardboard, and even metal. Often, upholstered headboards feature a combination of materials, such as wood and fabric. You can also forgo building materials and simply paint an accent wall behind the bed.

How to Make a Headboard

Headboards are mainly aesthetic features and make for excellent home decor projects for beginners. When making your own headboard, it’s best to take the project one step at a time. Follow these steps:

  1. 1. Brainstorm design ideas. Begin by looking for decor ideas online and in design books and magazines. You’ll likely find current trends, but expanding your search will give a sense of the wide range of possibilities. 2. Make a project plan. You might be working from a detailed tutorial or from a visual reference without instructions. Either way, it can be helpful to write out the necessary materials and have an idea in advance of how you’ll be putting them together. Making space measurements is also an important step; choose a headboard idea that works for your size bed—whether a single or a king size—and the space available in your bedroom.
  2. 2. Gather your materials. You might be working from found materials, and already have them on hand. Otherwise, you’ll need to go to the fabric or arts and crafts store for fabric headboards or the hardware store for wood or other materials.
  3. 3. Ensure you have the right tools. Having the right tools for your DIY project is crucial. If you’re working with wood, ensure you have the correct saw, sandpaper, varnish, paint, or other finishing options available. If using fabric, you may need a sewing machine or a sewing kit to hand sew or a staple gun, depending on the needs of your DIY upholstered headboard.
  4. 4. Follow your plan. Now all that remains is the execution. Working with your materials and tools, follow the steps outlined in your plan, and enjoy the results.

3 Tips for Making a Headboard

A headboard is a great beginner’s home DIY project. Here are a few things to keep you on the right track:

  1. 1. Start with a simple project. If you’re new to DIY home improvement or DIY home decor, it’s best to start as simply as possible. This will often have the added benefit of being aesthetically pleasing; particularly if you’re a fan of the minimalist style, a simple headboard can be exactly the right choice. It’s best to begin with easy DIY before moving on to advanced projects.
  2. 2. Shop around. It’s best to spend extra time in preparation to ensure you are happy with the results. Be thorough in your research: peruse the Internet for inspiration and look at the tutorials in detail, keeping in mind the necessary tools (some of which might require purchase) and the cost of the materials before you make up your mind.
  3. 3. Measure twice, cut once. This is especially important if you’re using wood of some kind, but it’s true of any material that you plan on cutting. It’s always good to double-check your work, even if you’re an experienced DIY practitioner.
