What Is a Deadlift Grip?

A deadlift is a strength training exercise characterized by lifting a barbell with a hip hinge movement pattern. It is a common powerlifting and weightlifting exercise, designed to build muscle along the posterior chain, including the lower back muscles, lats, trapezius, hamstrings, and the erector spinae muscles.

Why Should You Vary Your Deadlift Grip?

There are several hand positions used for gripping the barbell during deadlifts, including the double overhand grip, mixed grip, and hook grip. Alternating between different grip styles is advised to reduce the risk of injury (such as biceps tears) and prevent the development of muscle imbalances. Consider practicing half of your working set in one grip style before alternating to another for the same number of reps.

3 Common Deadlift Grips

Olympic lifters use a variety of hand grips when practicing deadlifts. Consider incorporating the following deadlift grip styles in your workout routine.

  1. 1. Double overhand grip: A double overhand grip (also called a pronated grip) is the most common type of grip used in Olympic deadlifting. To perform the double overhand grip, simply reach down and grip the barbell with your left hand and right hand with both of your palms facing toward you.
  2. 2. Mixed grip: A mixed grip deadlift relies on alternating grip styles. To perform a mixed grip deadlift, the lifter places their dominant hand in an overhand grip position and their non-dominant hand in an underhand grip (supinated) position. For example, a right-handed weightlifter would have their right palm facing them and their left palm facing away from them.
  3. 3. Hook grip: The hook grip is similar to the double overhand grip in the sense that both hands assume a pronated grip position. However, the hook grip has you lock your thumb between your middle finger and ring finger or middle finger and index finger.

When it comes to deadlifting heavy loads, grip strength is a limiting factor. A strong grip is absolutely essential for practicing deadlifts. If you do not have experience lifting heavier weights, consider practicing pull-ups to develop grip strength before attempting a heavy deadlift. Lifting straps can also assist with the range of motion necessary for lifting heavy weights. If you're practicing deadlifts for the first time, use straps and only lift a comfortable amount of weight.

How to Work Out Safely and Avoid Injury

If you have a previous or pre-existing health condition, consult your physician before beginning an exercise program. Proper exercise technique is essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of an exercise program, but you may need to modify each exercise to attain optimal results based on your individual needs. Always select a weight that allows you to have full control of your body throughout the movement. When performing any exercise, pay close attention to your body, and stop immediately if you note pain or discomfort.

To see continual progress and build body strength, incorporate proper warm-ups, rest, and nutrition into your exercise program. Your results will ultimately be based on your ability to adequately recover from your workouts. Rest for 24 to 48 hours before training the same muscle groups to allow sufficient recovery.
