What Are Chocolate Chip Brownies?
Chocolate chip brownies—or chocolate chip cookie brownies or double chocolate brownies—are classic chocolate brownies that include chocolate chips or chocolate chunks. The flavor is similar to a double chocolate chip cookie but with a more fudge-like texture.
Adding chocolate chips to homemade brownies makes for a gooey texture and a more chocolaty flavor. White chocolate (also a common ingredient in blondies) and milk chocolate chips will add sweetness, whereas dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate chips will add sweetness and a hint of bitterness.
First-time brownie makers can always add chocolate chips to a box mix if making chocolate chip brownies from scratch is too intimidating.
Flavor Additions to Chocolate Chip Brownies
The best brownies are ones you can customize to your own personal preferences. Add your favorite mix-ins to a chocolate chip brownie recipe since dessert recipes with multiple chocolate flavors often benefit from the addition of other ingredients to balance out the sweetness. Here are a few flavors that pair well with fudgy brownies:
- Brown butter: A homemade brownie recipe calls for melted butter, but adding brown butter lends a nutty, toasty flavor to the brownies. Browning butter takes a few minutes longer than merely melting the butter, but the end product complements chocolate nicely.
- Espresso powder: Many chocolate cake and cupcake recipes call for freshly brewed coffee or instant coffee granules. Brownies and chocolate cake are similar, so adding espresso powder to the brownie batter works similarly. The coffee flavor in the brownies makes the chocolate taste more chocolatey, even if you’re using a boxed brownie mix.
- Peanut butter: Homemade brownies usually contain melted chocolate and sugar—both sweet ingredients that contrast pleasantly with the salt in peanut butter. Swirl peanut butter into the brownie batter or make a peanut butter frosting.
