You can top the potatoes with mini marshmallows and then bake them in a casserole dish to create a sweet potato casserole. They are often served on a holiday table as an Easter, Christmas, or Thanksgiving side dish.

4 Tips for Making Candied Sweet Potatoes

Candied sweet potatoes make for a perfect autumn side dish. Follow these tips to ensure a successful baking process:

  1. 1. Make the dish ahead of time. You can make candied sweet potatoes ahead of time. To reheat, cover a baking dish with foil and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until warmed through.
  2. 2. Prepare the potatoes on a stovetop or in a slow cooker. While you’ll get the best results on your stovetop, a more convenient version of candied sweet potatoes can be made using your slow cooker. Add all ingredients to the slow cooker and set on low for two to three hours.
  3. 3. Use fresh sweet potatoes. Come holiday time, grocery stores are stocked with pre-made canned candied yams. To have better control over texture and flavor, stick with fresh sweet potatoes.
  4. 4. Add extra flavors. Additional flavors like orange zest, maple syrup, cardamom, and pecans will add complexity and personality to your candied sweet potatoes.
