Can Dogs Eat Yucca? Symptoms of Yucca Poisoning

Yucca is the common name for some plants within the yucca genus of drought-tolerant trees, plants, and shrubs, which belong to the Asparagaceae family. Native to Mexico, yucca plants produce stalks that grow up to ten feet in height and have waxy white flowers that attract yucca moths. Some yucca varieties bear edible fruits, seeds, and flowers, but they are not commonly used in cooking.

Yucca plants thrive in desert climates and are often grown ornamentally. However, it’s best to keep your dogs away from these plants since they can cause serious health problems, especially if eaten in large quantities.

Raw yucca root is poisonous to dogs. It contains a natural steroid called steroidal saponin that poses a threat to your dog’s health and can be fatal in extreme cases. This toxic compound is found in every part of the plant. Large amounts of yucca can cause debilitating digestive problems and toxicity.

Some health supplements for dogs use yucca extract from Yucca schidigera plants, which has anti-inflammatory properties, to ease joint pain. However, if you need to supplement your dog’s diet, err on the side of caution and consider giving them turmeric instead.

Yucca is often confused with yuca, or cassava root, an edible plant used for making dishes such as yuca fries and cassava cake. Yuca is safe for dogs in small amounts and contains carbohydrates, calcium, and phosphorus.

If your dog eats a large quantity of raw yucca root, they could experience adverse side effects, such as drooling, weakness, incoordination, bloating, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, increased heart rate, vomiting, and diarrhea. The most common symptoms include digestive issues and lethargy. Consult your vet if your dog eats yucca and shows any of these symptoms.
