Can Dogs Eat Waffles?
Plain, homemade waffles are not toxic to dogs, and an occasional piece isn’t going to hurt them. Do not feed your dog frozen waffles. The recipes used to make most store-bought frozen waffles include additives, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) that are toxic to dogs. Be wary of sugar-free offerings, as they often contain xylitol as well. Symptoms of xylitol poisoning include hypoglycemia and liver failure.
Are Waffles Good for Dogs?
There are no health benefits to feeding your dog waffles. In moderation, plain, unsweetened waffles do not pose a significant threat to your dog’s health, but they provide little to no nutrients. Though waffle recipes containing whole wheat flour or amaranth flour are healthier options, their nutritional value is also negligible. Blueberry waffles are probably the best dog waffles since blueberries are high in antioxidants that are good for your dog. However, most types of waffles, including gluten-free waffles, are high in carbohydrates and essentially empty calories. Avoid feeding waffles to dogs with health issues like obesity and diabetes to stave off unhealthy weight gain.
Can Dogs Eat Waffles With Syrup?
Though a plate of Belgian waffles piled high with syrup, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and chocolate chips may make for an indulgent human breakfast, sugary toppings present a myriad of health risks to your furry friend. Most dog owners know not to feed chocolate to their dogs (due to a toxic compound called theobromine), but maple syrup and whipped cream can be just as problematic to your dog’s health. Whipped cream can cause digestive issues in dogs with lactose intolerance. Maple syrup has a high sugar content which can contribute to high blood sugar levels, obesity, heart disease, and dental issues. Fatty toppings like butter can contribute to pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
