Are Pretzels Good for Dogs?
It is best to avoid feeding pretzels to dogs. The high salt content, additives, and carbs can pose the following risks to your dog’s health:
- Sodium: Hard and soft pretzels are high in sodium, which can contribute to excessive thirst and urination, dehydration, and heart disease or kidney failure for dogs. If your dog eats a large amount of pretzels, monitor their reaction and look for signs of salt poisoning, like disorientation and vomiting.
- Flavorings: Flavored pretzels with spices like garlic or onion powder will upset your dog’s stomach, and sweet pretzels may contain yogurt or artificial sweeteners like xylitol, a toxic ingredient that can cause liver failure in dogs.
- Carbohydrates: Pretzels have large amounts of carbohydrates, which can increase dogs’ blood sugar levels and cause weight gain. Excessive consumption of pretzels can lead to obesity in dogs.
How Many Pretzels Can Your Dog Eat?
In general, dog owners should avoid giving any amount of pretzels to dogs. Stick to dog food and other healthy snacks with low salt content and high nutritional benefits. If you choose to give your dog a pretzel snack, you can break up two or three thin, unsalted pretzel sticks into small pieces to give to your dog. Hard pretzels are best—the soft ones can be too chewy and may be a choking hazard. Monitor your dog’s digestion to see that this treat is not detrimental to their wellbeing.
