Commercial ketchups contain chemical ingredients, additives like xanthan gum, sweeteners, and sugar substitutes to add flavor. For example, sugar-free varieties may contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs and can rapidly crash their blood sugar levels.
2. 2. High sodium content: Ketchup contains added salt. Consuming large quantities of salt is detrimental to your dog’s health and can result in salt poisoning.
3. 3. Toxic additives: Some tomato ketchups have added ingredients like onion powder or garlic powder, which are toxic to dogs. Garlic and onions damage your dog’s red blood cells and can cause hemolytic anemia.

If your dog ate store-bought or homemade ketchup, monitor them for the next few hours and take them to the vet if they show symptoms of illness or an allergic reaction, such as vomiting, skin irritation, or abdominal pain. If your dog licks or sneaks a small amount of ketchup off your plate of french fries or eats a ketchup packet, the risk is minimal, depending on the size of your dog, but large quantities of ketchup are dangerous for your pet.
