Can Dogs Eat Cake?
No, cake is unhealthy for dogs. Many kinds of cake—like chocolate cake or cake with raisins—are toxic for dogs, and all cake contains high amounts of calories, fat, sugar, and other harmful additives. Cake has no health benefits for dogs, and dogs that eat cake can be at a higher risk for obesity, blood sugar problems, digestive issues, and pancreatitis.
4 Reasons Dogs Should Avoid Eating Cake
Cake ingredients are harmful to dogs. Some of the reasons dogs should avoid cake include:
- 1. Excessive quantities of sugar: While cake can satisfy your sweet tooth, your dog’s food should have a low sugar content—too much sugar and other sweeteners can cause blood sugar problems or long-term issues like obesity and diabetes. Avoid sugar-free cakes, too, since these can have artificial sweeteners (like xylitol) that can cause blood sugar issues for your pet.
- 2. High calorie content: Cake is a high-calorie dessert, which can be harmful to your dog’s diet. It’s unhealthy to feed your dogs large amounts of calorie-dense human foods; consistent quantities of high-calorie foods can cause rapid weight gain and long-term complications for your dog’s health.
- 3. Too much fat: Your dog’s digestive system cannot process large amounts of fat efficiently, so foods high in saturated fats—like cake—can lead to an upset stomach, bloat, and other digestive problems. Long-term health issues include an increased risk of heart disease and pancreatitis or the swelling of the pancreas.
- 4. Toxic ingredients: Cakes come in many different flavors and may include several ingredients that are toxic to dogs, such as chocolate, macadamia nuts, xylitol (an artificial sweetener), and raisins. If your dog ingests any of these foods, even in small quantities, they can experience significant stomach upset, diarrhea, or vomiting.
What Kind of Cake Can Dogs Eat?
Dogs can only eat specially made dog-friendly cake recipes. If dog owners want to give a sweet treat to their pet to celebrate a special day, avoid the temptation of a store-bought birthday cake for humans and instead bake a special “doggy cake” or “dog cupcakes” (sometimes called “pupcakes”). You can make a dog-friendly cake from scratch or buy a special type of cake mix designated for dogs.
How to Make a Dog-Friendly Cake in 4 Steps
Making homemade dog food and treats ensures they are low-calorie and free of harmful ingredients. However, dog treats (including homemade dog cake) should make up a maximum of ten percent of your dog’s daily calorie intake. Here’s how to make a dog birthday cake:
- 1. Pick a safe base and binding ingredient. Make the base out of whole-grain flour (to offer beneficial dietary fiber) and a dog-friendly binding ingredient like all-natural peanut butter, unsweetened applesauce, olive oil, or an egg. Combine the ingredients.
- 2. Add flavor with safe fruits and vegetables. Purée fruits and vegetables that are safe for dogs, like carrots, peas, or strawberries, and fold them into the mixture until combined.
- 3. Bake your doggy cake. Transfer the ingredients to a cake pan and bake until you can stick a knife in the center and it comes out clean, about twenty to thirty minutes, depending on your ingredients.
- 4. Finish with a dog-friendly topping. Top the cake with a thin layer of plain low-fat Greek yogurt or unsweetened peanut butter.
