Dogs can eat some types of cactus in moderation, but some are toxic to dogs. Christmas cactus, a popular houseplant, is not harmful to dogs, and the cactus pads of prickly pear cactus—or nopales, a common ingredient in Mexican cuisine—are safe for dogs in moderation. Cacti offer health benefits as a rich source of antioxidants and essential nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. However, many types of cactus cause stomach problems if eaten in large amounts, and cactus spines can lodge in your dog’s body or digestive tract when eaten or swallowed.

While some cactus plants are safe for dogs in moderation, others can lead to health problems. Feeding your dog cactus can lead to:

1. 1. Injury from the spines: The most common way a cactus can harm a dog is from the ingestion of spines, which can lodge deeply in your dog’s skin. Remove them from your dog’s mouth with tweezers and monitor your pet for signs of fever or ongoing pain.
2. 2. Poisoning: While most types of cactus are harmless if eaten, several cacti and succulents are toxic if consumed, including pencil cactus and barrel cactus. Side effects from consuming these plants are rarely life-threatening but include breathing problems and hallucinations.
3. 3. Stomach upset: Even if a cactus isn’t poisonous, it can still leave your dog with stomach pain or skin issues. Cactus flesh is a fibrous plant material that leads to gastrointestinal distress if eaten in large amounts, as can exposure to any fertilizers used to grow the plants. For dogs prone to allergic reactions, the sap of the cactus is particularly dangerous to their overall health; it can cause blisters or rashes on the dog’s skin and temporary or permanent blindness if it comes in contact with their eyes.

Dogs can eat cooked nopales in small amounts. Nopales are the edible pads of Opuntia ficus-indica, the prickly pear cactus. From the Nahuatl word “nohpalli,” nopales are a traditional side dish throughout Mexico. Dogs enjoy eating nopales for the taste, which is similar to cucumbers or green peppers, and the texture, which is firm like green beans. They are high in dietary fiber, which helps prevent constipation and bloating, and they can reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

However, if dogs eat nopales in excess, the high fiber content can cause digestive system issues. Additionally, raw nopales contain oxalic acid, which creates calcium oxalate crystals and leads to kidney damage.
