Distilled water, or purified water, is water that has undergone a cycle of evaporation and condensation. When water evaporates, it leaves behind impurities and minerals and rises as pure water vapor into the air. With the right tools, it’s possible to re-condense this water vapor and then capture it, creating a source of clean drinking water.

While dogs can drink distilled water in limited quantities, it is not the best water for dogs to drink daily. Distilled water lacks essential nutrients, minerals, and electrolytes, making it less beneficial to add to your dog’s water bowl. Other types of water like spring water that has undergone filtration or well water from your faucet should be your dog’s main water source as they provide minerals and nutrients like magnesium and calcium. Offering distilled water as your pet’s regular water supply can lead to negative side effects and health issues such as kidney disease.

Like filtered water, distilled water is free of contaminants, pesticides, fluoride, fertilizers, or chloride; however, unlike a filtration system, distillation also removes beneficial vitamins and minerals. Pet owners should not offer their dogs distilled water exclusively because it:

1. 1. Causes a loss of electrolytes: Distilled water can lead to a loss of important electrolytes in your dog’s kidneys and low blood levels.
2. 2. Lacks necessary nutrients: While water filters that work by reverse osmosis remove impurities from tap or bottled water, distillation from boiling water removes all nutrients. The bottom line: Giving your dog distilled water means they will not get essential minerals in their diet. This could lead to various health issues, such as potassium deficiency.
3. 3. May lead to swelling: Distilled water absorbs into your dog’s tissues faster than tap water or regular water. This can lead to swelling of your dog’s internal organs and may even cause water toxicity or over-hydration.
